Potomac (aka Mac, for short!) is an adult bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). He was rescued near the North Branch of the Potomac River after being found unable to fly. He suffered a wing fracture and serious soft tissue injuries; we aren’t sure how he sustained those injuries, but we think that he may have lost a territorial dispute with another eagle. Mac has reduced range of motion in the damaged wing and doesn’t have sufficient flight ability to return to the wild.
In the wild, bald eagles scavenge on animal carcasses in addition to taking live prey. At the ACCA, Mac’s favorite foods include rabbits and fish. He also eats quail, rats, and portions of donated archery-killed deer. Mac is a favorite with our volunteers and staff. For more information: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bald_Eagle/ |
