Introduction:
At the ACCA, we believe in the power of community-driven conservation. American kestrel populations are facing decline, and we are determined to uncover the reasons behind it. Through the Peregrine Fund’s American Kestrel Partnership, we're launching a comprehensive research initiative with the support of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR). Research Goals: Our primary goals involve monitoring American kestrel nest boxes, determining their success, investigating causes of failure, and contributing valuable data for local and continental-scale analysis. By involving our community, we aim to empower citizens to play a direct role in avian conservation. Our research extends beyond the birds; we're measuring the impact of these community relationships too! How You Can Participate: Receive a Free Nest Box Do you own property in West Virginia with open grasslands or rangelands? Are you part of a local park, school, or community space interested in participating? Join us for the 2026 Breeding Season! Attend a presentation in Fall 2025 (virtual or in person) to learn about the program and requirements. After completing our application, qualified candidates will receive a nest box provided by the WVDNR. For more information, interested members of the public can email ACCA research director Evan McWreath. |
