Killy is a male American kestrel (Falco sparverius) from Hancock County, WV. He was found as a young chick, alone on the ground. The finder couldn't locate a nest. After spending several days being cared for by humans, he was delivered to the ACCA. Unfortunately, the young bird already showed signs that he had imprinted humans. It's not safe or ethical to release a human-imprint raptor, so Killy was transferred to our educational team. Because he doesn't show natural fear of humans, Killy is an excellent ambassador, and is one of our most popular educational birds.
In the wild, kestrels eat a variety of insects and small mammals. They live on farmland and grasslands, and the species is in steep decline across much of its range. For more information: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/American_Kestrel/ |
