Visitors to our Outdoor Classroom can enjoy the native plant garden that surrounds our bird enclosures. With the help of a generous grant from the WVU Extension Master Gardeners as well as support from the Monongahela Master Naturalists, volunteers manage the designing, planting, and upkeep of our garden. Native plants are important to bird conservation; they coevolved with insects that are important food for native songbirds, especially during nesting season.
We've selected plant species for their wildlife value. Some of the species represented in our garden include: Eastern redbud Butterfly weed Purple coneflower Prairie smoke Blazing star Prairie dropseed Monarda sp. Hairy beardtongue Foxglove beardtongue Mountain mint Orange coneflower Aster sp. Bluestem sp. Spotted bee balm Black-eyed susan Phlox sp. Swamp milkweed Common milkweed Allegheny serviceberry Viburnum sp. Wingstem Pokeweed Columbine sp. |
