Thank you for your interest in an educational presentation from the Avian Conservation Center of Appalachia. We are looking forward to working with you! We are based near Morgantown, WV, and are licensed to possess non-releasable wild birds for education. Our exhibition of these birds is by permission of the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the US Department of Agriculture. The birds cannot be used to endorse any product or business, and their safety and welfare is a top priority.
What kind of program do you want to schedule? We typically offer the following options:
1. Field Trip to our Outdoor Classroom in Cheat Lake. Located on the property of Ridge Way Farm in Cheat Lake, our Outdoor Classroom is home to the non-releasable birds in our care. Your group can be given a guided tour around the bird enclosures to meet and learn about bald eagles, vultures, hawks, falcons, kites, and owls. We can also give an interactive presentation on our stage and provide other kinds of lessons or activities (dissecting owl pellets, making a bird-themed craft, etc.) depending on your group’s needs. Typically, we divide large groups into smaller groups and rotate the groups through stations. The Outdoor Classroom has electricity, bathrooms, a covered pavilion, and space for school buses to park and turn around. Field trips should last no more than three hours (approximately two hours of instruction and activities, and up to an hour for recess/lunch). Field trips must begin no earlier than 10am and must finish before 3pm. Depending on other scheduled events, field trips can be scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, and sometimes on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Suggested donations for field trips: $150 for 25 or fewer students; $250 for 25-50 students; $400 for 51-100 students; and $500 for 100-150 students. Donations allow us to feed, house, train, and provide veterinary care for the birds. If a monetary donation is an obstacle for your group, let us know and we will make another arrangement. 2. An interactive presentation at your location featuring 3 live birds. We can’t guarantee which birds, although we try to bring birds of a variety of species and sizes. A typical presentation is 45-minutes to an hour long. In addition to birds, we incorporate educational tools such as egg replicas, skull replicas, and feathers. Our educators discuss the importance of birds in ecosystems, the natural histories of the birds we bring, and the work we do at ACCA. We modify our presentations to suit the audience’s age and focus. We will need a table in the front of a room or be on a stage so that the entire audience can be in front of us; this makes the birds feel more comfortable. There is no minimum or maximum audience size. Presentations must begin no earlier than 10am and must finish before 3pm. Typically, we can schedule presentations at off-site locations on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays, and sometimes on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Suggested donation for a local program is $150. Donations allow us to feed, house, train, and provide veterinary care for the birds. If a monetary donation is an obstacle for your group, let us know and we will make another arrangement.
3.A static display at a booth or table. We can bring up to 3 birds to this kind of event, but we must be able to leave if the birds become stressed; we are unable to spend more than 3 hours at any event; we prefer to be set up on an “edge,” and if outside, we need to be in the shade.
